New species - Nannacara quadrispinae

Recommended Posts

Two cichlid taxonomists have described a new species of dwarf cichlid from the Orinoco delta.

The new cichlid was discovered in the western drainage of the Rio Orinoco delta in Mongas in eastern Venezuela, and is believed to be a close relative of Nannacara anomala.

Staeck and Schindler described the new species as Nannacara quadrispinae in the journal Zoologische Abhandlungen.

The authors say that N. quadrispinae is closely related to other members of the anomala species complex due to the presence of a reduced number of rays (14 vs. 16) in the caudal fin.

The new species usually has four spines in the anal fin - something not seen in other Nannacara.
