Is my cichlid dying or giving birth?

Recommended Posts

I have a full grown pink convict (South American) cichlid. I have noticed the last couple hours that it is lying sideways sandwiched inside one of the decorative castles in the tank. It doesn't seem to be breathing too heavy, but I have never seen it behave like this before. My tank is in very good shape and has been the site of three previous birthings - none by this fish however. The reason I think it may be giving birth is that the previous fish that were born in the tank seem to have originated in that same area (the toy castle).

I am afraid to approach it since I think it may be giving birth (or laying eggs, which do they do?). Can anyone offer any insight?

If shes just laying there on her side for any major length of time, shes probably sick, not laying eggs. Is she moving around at all? You can always just pull out the castle and see if there are any eggs in there.
