Protein skimmer Does a protein skimmer help control Nitrites and amonia?

Does any of our memebers use a protein skimmer to help control nitrites and amonia? I just added 3 more fish to our 46 gal. tank making the total 7 fish and we have had a spike in nitrites and amonia. We do a water change of about 20-25 % once every 2 weeks.
