#1049 Getting into Cichlids

Posted by mizzel on 21 March 2005 - 09:22 PM in Introductions

Hey Danny,

I've kept fish for about 10 years, and got into cichlids about a year ago. They are very rewarding fish! I got a lot of help from this website when I was first trying to figure out what to use for a setup: www.cichlidrecipe.com I started with a 30 gallon, and just moved to a 50 about 2 months ago. That's about as big as I can go in my condo...maybe it's time to get a house! More room for the fish that way. Good luck!

I've heard of Clown Loaches used to eat snails, but the catch 22 on them is that they need a constant supply of snails for food. I was hoping to curb the snail explosion before it happens instead of doing damage control with fish I'm not interested in keeping. Thanks for the suggestion, but any other ideas? I'll never go to petsmart again!

#990 plants and afr. cichlids

I have good luck keeping Hornwort (ceratophyllum dermersum) in with my cichlids. It's really a floating plant that dosn't root, but you can anchor it into the substrate. It's an easy plant to keep, and my fish don't bother it much. It can grow really tall, so I replant clippings and do regular trimmings on them. My cichlids have picked apart some other plants that I've used, but these have been ok. I also think it helps that I give my fish veggies pretty frequently, and they ravage them! They absolutely love zucchini. Good Luck!

#989 Snails!

This morning while doing weekly maintenence on my 50 gal cichlid aquarium, I found a little snail. Because of a snail problem, I moved my fish into this NEW tank about 2 months ago, and they were the only thing from the old tank that came to the new tank. Everything else was brand new: water, gravel, decor, filter, tubing, EVERYTHING but the fish was new. I did put in 2 new plants after carefully washing them and inspecting them for snail eggs. I don't want another snail mess on my hands, does anyone know what I can do to get rid of them without hurting the fish? I'm so frustrated!
